Catherine was a Lithuanian peasant when she first met with her future husband, Peter the Great, in early 1703. She was captured during the Northern War and used to work for a prince of Russia as a domestic serf. It was later in that year that Peter and Catherine had their first child and the church of Russian Orthodox received her.

Catherine and Peter overall had twelve children, with only two daughters surviving, Elizabeth (Yelizaveta) and Anna. Peter was first married to Eudoxia Lopukhina, then he divorced her and formally married Catherine in 1712. (It is believed that, in 1707, they were married in secret.) Catherine, in 1724, was crowned officially as empress.

Peter the Great died in less than a year and she became Empress Catherine I— the first woman to rule Russia.

Catherine I was uneducated, but it did not, in any way, truncate her strong character and commonsense which was an essential component to be a leader.

During her reign, she reduced the number of armies of Russia, which was around 140,000 (100,000 being Cossacks), as she found the military expenses deleterious to Russia’s economy and it was not that necessary as Russia was also at peace. The military expenditure accounted for 65% of the annual revenue. Catherine I’s advisors had control over many decision making in the country, but she, in this particular case, took a strong stand.

Her years as Empress, unfortunately, were rather short, as it only lasted for two years due to her death in 1727.

After Catherine’s rule, the grandson of Peter the Great, Peter II, ascended to the throne at the age of twelve. He nevertheless died shortly after three years.
